After root canal treatment

Will it hurt after?: Some discomfort for several days is common. The best predictor of how you'll feel afterward is how much the tooth hurt beforehand. If severe pain continues and isn't improving, call us so we can check the tooth.
What can I take for pain?: For mild discomfort, take ibuprofen (Advil) as directed on the package. For more significant pain, take ibuprofen together with acetaminophen (Tylenol), following each package's directions. Taken together, they control pain better than narcotics do.
How long will I be numb?: Expect to be numb for 2–3 hours after your appointment. Be careful not to bite your cheek, lip, or tongue, or burn yourself on hot food or drinks, until the feeling returns.
Do I need antibiotics?: Usually not. Antibiotics are needed only in the most severe cases, because the root canal itself treats the infection.
