Caring for your night guard or retainer
How to wear and care for a retainer or occlusal appliance (also called a night guard or bite guard).
- How often should I wear it?
- Unless specifically directed otherwise, wear your appliance every night.
- How do I clean it?
- Every day, rinse it well with warm (not hot) water and let it air dry. At least once a week, scrub it with a denture brush and dish soap. Effervescent cleaners work too.
- Should I bring it to my dental appointment?
- Yes. At your cleaning, we will clean it and check that it still fits well. If you have other dental work done, we will make sure it still fits afterward.
